Hello! I am Joanna. I am the mommy/teacher behind At the Heart of Something Special. Thank you for joining me on this blogging journey. Please don’t be shy. As I start this journey, I look forward to hearing from you and getting to know you as you get to know me too!
Who am I?
As a mom of 3 and a proud dog owner, Zara, Karter, and Chase (ok, and Blizzard, too!) are my reasons. I work daily to be the best version of myself and encourage them to do the same.
While there is no such thing as perfection, I want to be a good role model to everyone in my life.
You could say I am, obviously, a little obsessed with personal development. Trying always to be a little bit better each day. I keep trying new things, pushing myself to achieve my goals and living my best life doing things I love. I want to teach them (and you!) to do the same thing.
Even though I am a teacher, I constantly learn and love to learn new things. I guess that’s another reason I have started this blog! A lot to learn here.

Then there’s Blizzard, my dog, who helps me sleep. He is the best giant pillow ever! We love him to bits and spoil him tons. He gets to sleep in our bed (Shhh! Don’t tell our dog trainer!). I think sometimes; it’s more for our benefit than his!
One more thing you should know about me is my love for coffee. Besides my family, my students, and my love for writing, it is one of my favourite things!
How can I help you?
As I mentioned, I have always loved to write and knew that it was something I needed to pursue in one way or another. I have been blessed with various writing opportunities and can’t get enough.
Teaching for over twenty years, I have met many children with special needs. These children have been a joy and a privilege to get to know. Fortunately, I always had incredible support to guide me along the way.
And now, nearly eight years later, I am a mom to a special needs son and wow, have I learned so much! It must be the teacher in me to want to teach you.
I hope to inspire and encourage teachers and parents alike to help them realize that they have someone in their corner who truly knows what they are going through.

In this blog, I want to share what I have learned inside and outside the classroom. As a teacher, I aim to help others understand how to support these children without losing the opportunity to help everyone in the classroom thrive.

We face many challenges daily, but I want to ensure that despite it all, we can still live happily ever after! (Sorry for the cheesiness, but it’s so true!)
Let’s live our best life!
Not only am I here to help find a solid balance between giving these special needs children what they need to know and thrive. This is also where you will learn to live a life filled with joy, laughter, and beautiful memories for the whole family.
With this in mind, At The Heart of Something Special is dedicated to supporting you so you can support your children.

Not only will this place be full of tips and tricks, but we will also have tons of resources available along the way. As I fulfill my dreams, I am here to help you live yours!
